Welcome to the grahnArt Project. This is the parent site for a set of initiatives—Drifting Sands Haibun and The Abstractaphy Initiative—based on the arts and designed to foster deeper understanding of, and commitment to, positive change in people’s lives and in their relationships with their fellow humans along with all other aspects of life on this planet. Richard Grahn is the founder and developer of the project. The project’s two initiatives are defined below:

Mission: To energize the imagination and enhance the lives of artists, writers, viewers, readers, and listeners through the experience of art and the written word; to foster a global community of artists and art lovers; and to promote positive change in the world through art.

This initiative features English language poetry in the Haibun and Tanka Prose forms (derived from centuries-old Japanese forms). Poets from around the world submit poetry to the site and issues are published four times a year.

Along with the journal, Drifting Sands Haibun produces a poetry-based podcast (Ripples in the Sand) featuring poets from the pages of the journal.

The Rachel Sutcliffe Haiku-Arts Contest – A yearly contest featuring haibun from around the world. Poets submit poems based on photographic prompts for consideration by our guest judges.

This initiative is comprised of an online journal of writing and imagery dedicated to raising awareness of global issues and inspiring individuals to participate in the well-being of life on this planet.

It’s growing, body of content derived from submissions made to the journal by its contributors and slated for future publication as a physical collection of art to be exhibited in public spaces, in print, and as presentations for use in education, for example.

The Abstractaphy Initiative’s Message to Humanity is simple: We must now set aside our grievances and see our fellow human beings as partners in a grand collaboration to, in the words of Anne Frank, “improve the world.”
